As the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea he managed the complex alliance between the United States and South Korea, led the Embassy team in day-to-day diplomacy as well as disruptions caused by COVID-19 and unpredictable provocations from North Korea, advocated for the well-being of all American citizens in Korea, advocated for U.S. businesses to overcome barriers to success in the Korean market, advocated for Korean businesses to open up shop in the U.S., facilitated cost-sharing negotiations with the Korean government, and facilitated negotiations between the U.S. and North Korea.
Retiring from the U.S. Navy as an Admiral following 40 years of service, Harry served in the highest levels of command to include U.S. Pacific Command, U.S. Pacific Fleet, and U.S. Sixth Fleet. He additionally served in key senior staff positions within The Pentagon and at U.S. Southern Command.
With over 4,400 flight hours, including more than 400 combat hours, in maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, he is the first Navy flyer from this community to achieve 4-star rank. Recognized nationally for his work in diversity, he is the first Asian-American 4-star rank in the Navy, and the first to command U.S. Pacific Command. Prior to his retirement, Harry was the “Gray Owl” as the U.S. Navy’s longest serving Naval Flight Officer and the “Old Goat” as the longest serving Naval Academy graduate still on active duty.
